In 2011, Matt Aslett of 451 Research (now a part of S&P Global Market Intelligence) introduced a category of emerging new databases and coined it NewSQL. Fast forward ten years and a subset of this group has emerged with a re-architected and reimagined concept of relational databases, Distributed SQL.

This second generation of SQL database vendors is better positioned to succeed where their NewSQL predecessors failed. The results of 451 Research’s Voice of the Enterprise: Data & Analytics, Data Platforms 2021 survey found that 58% of IT decision-makers expected to use a globally distributed database within a year, while 70% planned to do so within three years. It is time to move on.

Please join us as we welcome Matt Aslett to the Cockroach Hour where we’ll discuss what happened to NewSQL and talk through his latest research outlining the newly mounted Distributed SQL category. We also cover:

  • What happened to NewSQL
  • Why go “global”? Why cloud? Why distributed?
  • How and why to use Distributed SQL?
  • Where is all of this headed for our databases?

Matt Aslett BIO Matt Aslett is a Research Director with responsibility for the Data, AI & Analytics Channel at 451 Research, a part of S&P Global Market Intelligence.
