In case you missed it, RoachFest24 is off to a terrific start at Menlo Park and London, and we’re stoked to reload on September 26th for RoachFest NYC

The second in a series of RoachFest presentations by our remarkable CockroachDB customers, we’ve baked up fresh for you: Devsisters’ tips and learnings from using CockroachDB for their popular CookieRun mobile game franchise! With over 200 million cumulative users worldwide, high availability and resiliency at scale has been critical for their operations.

Devsisters’ Lead DevOps Engineer, ChangWon Lee showed off his GingerBrave plushie – the starting character for CookieRun players – as he began his presentation. A CookieRun player himself and early adopter of CockroachDB, Lee shared his wealth of knowledge with RoachFest attendees about how best to implement the distributed SQL database.

In 2019, Devsisters began investigating CockroachDB as a potential tool for their games. With regular updates, a complex development cycle, spikes of heavy traffic, and high transactional demands from users, Devsisters needed their database to offer:

    • Horizontal scalability

    • Transactional support

    • Guaranteed consistency

    • Support for frequently changing schemas

Lee shared how easily CockroachDB fit into their Kubernetes setup. The first game Devsisters launched with CockroachDB was CookieRun: Kingdom in 2021. They followed up that success with CookieRun: Witch’s Castle and CookieRun: Tower of Adventures in 2024. Currently they are porting over an earlier game – the iconic CookieRun – from Couchbase to CockroachDB.

Lee skillfully balanced technical nuance with humorous anecdotes at every turn. In particular, he advocated for simple, straightforward solutions using the building blocks of cloud-native infrastructure to ensure ease of collaboration with other teams, like game studios and publishing companies.

Check out Lee’s full presentation below, and learn how CockroachDB empowers the Devsisters team to keep serving a sweet gaming experience.

Remember, RoachFest24 has another stop! Register here to join us in NYC on September 26th.
