Cockroach Labs Named #1 Large Company On Crain’s 2021 Best Places to Work

We’re pleased to announce that Crain’s has ranked Cockroach Labs #1 in the large companies category of its 2021 Best Places to Work in New York City list. This is the second year in a row Cockroach Labs has received this ranking, having also ranked first in the mid-sized category in 2019.

Our founders named Cockroach Labs after resilience and survival. During the past two years the strength of our culture and community helped us sustain that resilience as we navigated through turbulent times. From the very beginning, our goal was to build a human-forward business where our employees could balance their careers with their personal lives. We have built programs for better recruiting, more flexibility, better support, more opportunities in and out of the office, and fostered an environment where diversity of thought exists and is celebrated. Cockroach Labs has grown by over 100 Roachers in the last year and, despite such rapid growth, maintaining a human-centered culture remains a top priority for the company.

Building a culture that is fun, inclusive, and diverse is not something that just happens. It requires a continuous effort from the whole organization — an understanding that rings true for every Roacher, from the leadership team to our interns. In order for all of us to thrive, we all have to work together. We are proud of the workplace we have built and are proud that we are a team made up of curious, passionate, driven, different, and respectful individuals. Take a look at what we have to say about each other and the organization we have built together:

I believe that your development is influenced by the people you spend the most time with, so I prioritized working at a company filled with talented people. My colleagues push me to be a better professional daily. And, more importantly, they do so while also demonstrating strong core values. My co-workers are kind, generous, funny, and always willing to teach me something new. I am so thankful that I work with brilliant colleagues who are even better people.

- Andy Woods, Group Product Manager

Cockroach Labs has been disrupting the database space for the past few years with some of the smartest individuals in the industry. From your first day, it’s apparent the whole team wants to set everyone up for success in their roles. Starting with a Roachmate to help guide you in your role regardless of if you come in as an intern or director, a unique outlook on work-life balance with Flex Fridays, and an overall commitment to success to ensure we’re continuing our mission to enable developers to build world-changing applications all make it a one of a kind place to continue my career.

- Waverly Heurtelou, Technical Campus Recruiter

Cockroach Labs is a great place to work because, regardless of your professional background, the entire team is here to help get you up to speed and make sure you succeed. Because the database space and our tools are so complex, people at the company make sure you know there is no such thing as a bad question. In terms of work-life balance, especially during the pandemic - Roach & Relaxation days have been a huge help and on top of that, if you need a day to yourself, your manager can always help. The company culture really makes you feel part of the team, we’re always in the loop on the direction the company is going in and there’s a ton of transparency in the board updates.

- Matthew Vardi, Technical Support Engineer

I found out about Cockroach Labs through a number of former colleagues who had already come on board.  As someone who has worked at start-ups for the better part of the last decade, I do a good deal of homework before making a move.  As I went through that process, it was clear the technology was game-changing, which made the opportunity to be part of the growing team extremely compelling. But meeting the broader Cockroach team really solidified my decision. It gave me insight into a company where not only did they want to create a technology rocketship but where the culture was unique, inclusive and the goal was for people to grow along with the customer base.  I am honored to be part of the team here.

- Jen Murphy, Head of Channel Sales

I’m not exaggerating when I say Cockroach Labs’ thoughtful policies helped me survive the pandemic — through simple things like Spencer, our CEO, starting team meetings acknowledging that these are unusual times and we shouldn’t strive for business-as-usual and instead encouraging us to prioritize our well-being, to concrete actions like doubling the number of free mental wellness/therapy sessions offered. And a year later, the company policies are helping me figure out my “new normal” through career coaching and remote/hybrid work models. Working on a cutting-edge product with incredibly smart people at a company that helps me not only survive and but also thrive in these unusual times has been an absolute privilege this past year.

- Amruta Ranade, Developer Advocate
